Burglary - Don't let it happen to you.
The WebShowcase 7 point plan: Hints and Tips for protecting your home.
The crime statistics for the UK make alarming reading. Even if you haven't been burgled yourself, it's likely you'll know someone who has. The experience is undoubtedly a traumatic one.

Security advice is available from your local Crime Prevention Officer, who's experience of the local area will enable you to take the most effective measures when protecting your home and discouraging burglars. However, in the mean time, there are several things you can do straight away to make a burglars life as difficult as possible and ensure your home is as safe as it can be. These basic steps are intended as a guide only and not a replacement for the best professional advice.

1. Door Locks. Check the door lock plates on all exterior doors. They should be at least five-lever mortise deadlocks to standard BS3621 or BS3621:1980. Millions of homes still have the old three-lever, especially on back doors, and these should be replaced without delay.
2. Window Locks. Make sure all of your ground floor windows have suitable locks that use keys. This includes any windows that are accessible from a flat roof or drain pipe. 6 out of 10 burglaries take place at the back of the house, through a ground floor window.

Make sure you plan an escape route in case of fire or other emergency

3. Letter boxes. Make sure your letter box isn't so big, or in such a position that a small person could use it to reach the lock.
4. Windows again. Quite often, in older property, windows that are no longer used due to warping or which may have been painted shut years ago, can be permanently sealed by screwing them into the frame. Louvre windows can also be permanently glued together with glass adhesive, or if needed for ventilation, could have a metal grill placed over them, screwed into the frame. Patio doors should also have locking bolts fitted top and bottom to prevent sliding or lifting.
5. Outside lighting. Exterior lighting, used correctly, is a great deterrent as most burglars like to work unnoticed. Be careful that you're not just saving them the trouble of bringing a torch by lighting areas that won't be noticed by neighbours or passersby if a light comes on. Infra-red detectors are more cost effective than leaving lights on 12 or 24/7.
6. Neighbourhood Watch. Proven to work and accepted by insurance companies and the police as an effective crime prevention measure. N.W. schemes are free to operate, protect local areas and may even earn you a small discount on your insurance premiums. Details of how to start one are available from your local Crime Prevention Officer.
7. FIT AN ALARM. It doesn't have to be all-singing, all-dancing, all-everything and a flashy light aswell. It just has to make a noise when the beams are broken or a forced entry is detected. Research has shown that an alarm is the single most influential factor when a burglar is deciding whether to make you their next victim.
