The Home Office suggests that teenagers are particularly at risk. Nearly half a million young people aged between 11 and 15 fell victim to mobile phone theft last year. Write down and keep safe your phone's IMEI number (International Mobile Equipment Identity number) - which is a 15 digit number, unique to each phone. If the phone is stolen, this number can then be used by police to prove that the phone is stolen and to return it to the rightful owner. 2. Where is my IMEI number? You can display the IMEI by pressing * # 0 6 #, that's: "star", "hash", "zero", "six", "hash". Don't forget to write it down! 3. Mark your property. Mark your phone with one of those ultra-violet pens. Use any built in security features such as pin numbers and keypad locks. After you finish using the phone lock the keys, this helps reduce accidental 999 calls. 6. Switch off. If you're not using your mobile, keep it turned off. Only turn on or unlock phones when you intend to use them. Be aware of your surroundings. 7. Report. If your phone is lost or stolen then report it immediately.
